Neon Trees is an American alternative rock band from Provo, Utah, with origins in Murrieta, California. Alabama Shakes is an American rock band formed in Athens, Alabama in 2009. The group consists of lead singer Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, and drummer Steve Johnson.[1] The group received three nominations for the 2013 Grammy Awards: one for best new artist; one for best rock performance, for "Hold On"; and one for best recording package with their first album, Boys & Girls.[2][3]

The band originated when lead singer/guitarist Brittany Howard and bassist Zac Cockrell, both attending East Limestone High School in Athens, began meeting after school to write songs. The two played prog rock and other genres but soon found a calling playing roots rock. They approached drummer Steve Johnson, who was working at the local music store, to join the band and the trio soon went to a studio in Decatur, Alabama, to record some of the songs they were writing. Guitarist Heath Fogg joined the band after hearing the demo.[4] Though they had been working on original material, they worked up cover songs by Led Zeppelin, James Brown, Otis Redding, AC/DC and others to fill a "one show only" 45 minute set, under the name The Shakes. The band later added Alabama to their name to differentiate themselves from other bands called the Shakes.[5][6]
 
Alabama Shakes released the four-song EP Alabama Shakes in September 2011, gained media attention (including by NPR),[7] and earned them an invitation to play at CMJ.[8] The successful show CMJ in October 2011 caught the attention of Jon Pareles of The New York Times, who praised Howard's singing (comparing her to Janis Joplin) and the band's energy and musicianship.[9] In late 2011 the band's song "You Ain't Alone" was used in a Zales jewelry ad and Alabama Shakes made MTV's list of 11 Artists To Watch In 2012.[10][11] In the span of less than a year the band went from virtual obscurity to playing venues such as the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. and the Troubadour and Music Box Theater in Los Angeles.[12]
 
In November 2011 the band was signed by Rough Trade Records in the United Kingdom and ATO Records in the United States. In February 2012, the band was nominated for a mtvU Woodie for "best live performance".[13] Recently, Jack White tapped them to launch a series of singles for Third Man Records.[14]
 
The band's first full length album, Boys & Girls, was made available to be streamed live in its entirety on April 1, 2012.[15] In June 2012, the band played a closing set for the first night of the 2012 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival.

I don't recommend it, but anyway, I went into the other room and picked up a guitar and it just kind of happened, so from that moment on I learned when you have to write a song, when the melody is in your head." The music video for "Possum Kingdom" begins with a body bag being dragged from a lake, then pans to the lead singer, Todd Lewis, singing in a dark room. It then pans to a shot of the band performing in a small venue with several dozen dancing fans. The individual who dragged the body bag from the river then opens it to reveal a block of ice. The person then takes an ice pick and hacks away until the form of a woman's face is created. The video ends with a drop of water streaming down the ice.[3]

Possum Kingdom is a lake in Texas, near the Dallas/Ft. Worth area where the band is from - it even has its own Chamber of Commerce.

There are no mentions of possums or kingdoms in the lyrics, but we do hear a creepy story about a spooky walk around a lake.

In a 1995 interview with RIP magazine, Toadies lead singer Todd Lewis, who wrote the song, said: "It's just a story I heard long ago; it's just a really cool, eerie lake, and some stuff I heard and some stuff I just make up. I tend to do that. They dammed up this big river up there, and it's got all these spooky names like Hell's Gate. It's really cool."

Lewis went on to say that there was a real stalker in Tyler, Texas who became a folk hero: "I was down there for Thanksgiving, and after the family got through talking about who died and who's got cancer and all those things that families talk about, they started talking about this guy who was peeping in windows and started breaking into people's houses. He'd go out of his way to be seen, and everyone is like armed to the teeth, and he's like tapping on windows. The whole family was freaked out about it."

Emily Armstrong and Siouxsie Medley both began their foray into music as guitarists and singer-songwriters, Armstrong having first picked up a guitar at the age of 12,[2] while Medley, from the age of 9, initially practiced on the Fender Telecaster owned by her nanny (Magic Wands' Dexy Valentine), until the age of 11, when two years' worth of saved allowances provided the means by which Medley could purchase her own guitar, a Fender Squier.[3]
 
Before Dead Sara, Armstrong was both a solo artist, focusing on folk music, as well as a member of several school bands that she formed.[2] However according to Armstrong, her primary crafts initially were songwriting and guitar, and she didn’t fully come into her own as a singer until around the age of 15,[2] when her voice was able to form a pure, steady, clear vibrato at various pitches, allowing her the ability to sing and sing-scream full voiced and on key without the use of Auto-Tune or other vocal filters.
 
Armstrong and Medley met through a mutual friend, Diva Gustafsson, in late 2002 (when Armstrong was 16 and Medley 15),[2] began writing songs together in 2003,[4] and in 2004 their song “Changes” became the duo’s first recorded collaboration. Their first live performance as a band was in March 2005 at The Mint nightclub in Los Angeles, with Armstrong handling bass guitar duties and their first drummer, Aaron Bellcastro (who also performed on the "Changes" recording), rounding out the then-trio. (They expanded to a four-piece band shortly thereafter.)



"My mom had the idea about us writing our own Christmas song Snow In Los Angeles. She brought up the idea a previous year also but I kind of laughed it off until I brought it up to the band to share the humor but instead it sparked interest and we literally started writing it right then and there almost as part of the conversation," Dead Sara's Emily Armstrong tells Rolling Stone. "The lyric, 'It never snows in Los Angeles' was one of the first lyrics written and everything just seemed to make sense after that. So, Merry Christmas Mom!"
