The Dead Milkmen is an American satirical punk rock band formed in 1983 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mavis Staples (born July 10, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American rhythm and blues and gospel singer, actress and civil rights activist who recorded with The Staple Singers, her family's band.

Said lead singer Mavis Staples: "When we heard Dr. Martin Luther King preach, we said, 'If he can preach this, we can sing it.'"

Stax Records vice-president Al Bell wrote this after attending the funeral of his little brother, who was shot to death. Says Bell: "I went out in the backyard in my father's home. He had an old school bus there parked that was not running. I went back there and sat on the hood of that bus thinking about all that was happening. And all of a sudden, I hear this music in my head. And I heard these lyrics: 'I know a place, ain't nobody worried, ain't nobody crying, and ain't no smiling faces lying to the races, I'll take you there.' I heard it, and I heard the music. And it wouldn't leave, it stayed there. kept trying to write other verses, but I couldn't. Nothing worked - there was nothing left to say."

Bell brought out this song at the end of a recording session with the band. Says Bell: "Mavis couldn't get into it, she couldn't feel it, so I stood there on the floor and tried to sing it to the guys, as they got the music and they got into it. After getting it down, later on, I came back and sat with Mavis and, after a while, she started feeling it and giving in to that rhythm. Of course, she took it to heights that only a Mavis Staples can take it. Nobody else could do it justice, and I guess it was supposed to be that way."

Mavis Staples was one of the performers for the White House concert and will be broadcast next Tuesday Apr. 16th on your PBS stations.

Jocelyn Eve Stoker[1] (born 11 April 1987), better known by her stage name Joss Stone, is a British soul singer, songwriter and actress. Stone rose to fame in late 2003 with her multi-platinum debut album, The Soul Sessions.

I think Brent probably had someone specific in mind when he wrote this song, someone from his past. They are cordial to each other now, but his baby's mother and Brent were evil to each other. Also some people didn't believe in this band so it's a big middle finger to them."

Bassist/pianist Eric Bass had this song in his back pocket for a while before getting together for a writing session with Smith and frequent collaborator David Bassett. "The guitar riff and the kind of lead solo line was some stuff I'd had for a couple of months," he told Billboard magazine. "We were kind of going through subject matter that we wanted to write about and going over some things about people who have pissed us off from the past - somebody who's really divisive, who wedges themselves in between people and tries to tear people apart. That was the genesis for it, lyrically."
